## April 4, 2014

Hello!

We have had a profitable week in Math Pioneers!

As you are aware, mathematics is present in our everyday world. For this reason, Math Pioneers is continually working on helping Pioneers see math more than a purely academic subject and to find the related real-life implications.

This is where math vocabulary comes in, for it bridges the gap from math as an abstract concept to math as a real-world tool. Indeed, words are the key that can unlock the secret to numbers! Some words may have uses in everyday language as well as some uses that are specific to mathematical contexts, and it has been neat to watch the Pioneers make these connections. An example is the word "right" which when referring to an angle has a very specific mathematical meaning. Pioneers in grades 2-6 have been working hard on math vocabulary from various content categories (geometry, measurement & data, etc.) that provide clear goals defining what they should understand and be able to do at their specific grade levels. The older Pioneers (grades 7 & 8) have been working hard on the application of these math principles. Keep working hard, Pioneers!

*Note: After a Pioneer earns 4 Bronze Certificate Awards, the fifth certificate is a Silver Certificate Award.

Also, Congratulations to the students listed below for their hard work in earning a Certificate Award the week of March 24, the week of Mid-Semester Break.

Hello!

Colonial Christian School recently received a detailed review from the Mathletics company that is used for Math Pioneers. Over the next few weeks, I will be highlighting (see above) a few of the items from this review.

We had another wonderful week in Math Pioneers. After a week "off" to concentrate on testing, the students worked hard this week. Many of the classes spent time on Rapid Calculations, something that will continue throughout the remainder of the school year.

*Note: After a Pioneer earns 4 Bronze Certificate Awards, the fifth certificate is a Silver Certificate Award.

Have a wonderful break! See you in a week!

Hello!

As we look ahead, I have had a few parents inquire about Mathletics during the summer. Along those thoughts, here are a few quotes I read this week:

But wait!

There's no reason for your Pioneer to lose two months of grade level equivalency in computation skills... and there's no reason for you to wonder if there's anything productive your Pioneer can do to prevent this loss! Because...

Your Math Pioneer will have access to Mathletics, America's No. 1 Math Website, all summer long!

Yes, the same unique username and password that your Pioneer is currently using will be available all summer! Also, I will be checking progress and promoting Pioneers throughout the summer. Your Pioneer can choose to do as much or as little as you feel is appropriate for your family. Ideally, your Pioneer would strive to earn a Certificate Award each week, as your schedule allows. Let me know if you have any questions.

- "Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months" (Cooper, 1996).
- "Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do" (Duffett et al, 2004).

**It's time for Assessment Practice in Math Pioneers!**

**February 10 through March 2, 2014**

As you know, CCS students will be taking a series of standardized tests this Spring, including the SAT and ISTEP (grades 4-8). To help familiarize your Pioneer with some of these tests, we will be completing practice tests during the next few weeks in Math Pioneers.

When your Pioneer logs in beginning next week, they will find that they must complete one or two assessments per week (depending on grade level) before they can access regular Mathletics activities.

Because Indiana has not yet decided whether they will fully adopt the Common Core or a customized state curriculum, we are limited to the Common Core State Standards at this time. Consequently, please note that the purpose of this is simply to give your Pioneer practice. Unless you request to see your Pioneer's results, they will not be accessible. I will be looking through the results to check for any weaknesses your Pioneer may have and will be sharing the class results with the CCS math teachers.

Let me know if you have any questions. Once again, this is simply a tool that I will be using to give Pioneers a chance to practice for their upcoming assessments and to pinpoint any areas that need improvement. Thank you!

## A Semester in Review...

Dear Parents of Pioneers,

It is

One of my favorite aspects of the Pioneers program is that Pioneers are able to work at an accelerated rate that is aligned with each students' individual abilities. During a Pioneers class, I am able to constantly rotate from student to student, explaining concepts and answering questions. Although this often requires explaining certain concepts numerous times and at various times, I greatly appreciate the benefits of working with students one-on-one. They are truly a joy to work with!

In closing, I would like to mention a few of the statistical highlights from this semester.

Once again, thank you for your support. Looking forward to next semester!

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Dolvin

It is

**very exciting**for me to report that it has been an extremely profitable semester in Math Pioneers. Thank you for you support of this program. As this Fall semester draws to a close, I specifically want to thank you for your support in four areas:- Thank you for seeing the importance of a program such as Math Pioneers, and then supporting this program through your
**participation.** - Thank you for getting your
**Pioneers to classes**, many of you sacrificed precious time in the mornings to make sure you Pioneer was very early to school to begin working! - Thank you for you
**encouragement**to your Pioneers. I know you were cheering them on at home, as I was cheering for them at school. - Thank you for your
**prayers**. It is such a blessing to know that parents are praying for Colonial Christian School.

One of my favorite aspects of the Pioneers program is that Pioneers are able to work at an accelerated rate that is aligned with each students' individual abilities. Although this often requires explaining certain concepts numerous times and at various times, I greatly appreciate the benefits of working with students one-on-one. They are truly a joy to work with!

In closing, I would like to mention a few of the statistical highlights from this semester.

- Math Pioneers had
**30****students**enrolled this Fall, ranging from grades 2-8. - These 30 students earned
**over****240 Certificate Awards**. A Pioneer may earn one Certificate Award per week for point totals exceeding 1,000. (Many were way above this amount each week!) - These Pioneers answered
**over 55,200 questions correctly on Live Mathletics**. These were problems solved quickly as they were competing against classmates or other students from around the world. - These Pioneers
**solved****over 31,000 math problems**correctly this semester! These covered both review problems and mostly new concepts. - This is huge... these Pioneers earned
**over 910,700 points on Mathletics**this semester!!! Some classes averaged 14,000 points per week. - Many, too many to keep track of, Pioneers ranked in the
**TOP 100 students in the U.S.A.**at one point or another. It's neat to see studnets' names and CCS represented in this way. - Of these 30 Pioneers, 9 finished their grade levels sometime this Fall Semester and 3 more are expected to finish in the next few days. This means that these
**13 students are working above their grade level**now and are expected to be working at least a year, and some more, by the end of next semester!

Once again, thank you for your support. Looking forward to next semester!

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Dolvin

Hello!

REMINDERS:

1. The "week" for Pioneers ends at twelve o-clock Sunday night. Students have until this time to earn a Certificate Award for the week. The new "week" begins on Monday mornings.

2. Please do not allow your Pioneer to use a calculator while working at home. There are some activities where it is appropriate, but those are very few for the younger Pioneers. If in doubt, just encourage your Pioneer to choose a different activity until I can clarify.

**Andrew P.**(7): Andrew is also very willing to work hard in math. He is very teachable and ready to learn new things. He worked hard last week on percent equations, ratios, proportions, & interest problems... just to name a few! His work on direct variation was very in depth, & he handled it very well. He has almost completed two of the seven state standards for his grade level. You are awesome, Andrew!

Truly, all the Pioneers are doing an excellent job. They come to Pioneers each week ready to work hard, ready to learn... & they do. Encourage them to keep up this attitude. It is a joy to see them enjoying mathematics... & still be pushed to new levels.

Hello!

Keep looking for your Pioneer's name as a Top Mathlete of the Week. The Pioneers are working so hard. I wish you could see some of their enthusiasm for mathematics!

It truly was another wonderful week in Pioneers. Please note that on days when the computers are not working properly, the class will continue to work very hard together on rapid calculations, math games, math puzzles, and new concepts. Many of these activities are included in a weekly class anyway. You may be aware that your Pioneer has been working on a math puzzle this week.

Keep up the great work!

It has been another great week in Pioneers. The students are continuing to work very hard. Encourage them to keep it up!

The purpose of this update is to address four items: Calculator Usage, New Live Mathletics Levels, Bronze Certificate Award Winners, and Mathletes of the Week.

1.

__Calculator Usage:__Please note that although the students are consistently bringing their calculators to Pioneers every session, many of them have not actually been using them yet. We do have a few Pioneers who have used them for finding the prime factorizations of very large numbers, dealing with large exponents, or for multi-step word problems involving large amounts of money. You can be assured that Pioneers do not use their calculators for basic math; they have been doing very well understanding this during our sessions.2.

__New Live Mathletics Levels:__A number of Pioneers, particularly the older students, have now been blocked from some of the lower levels of Live Mathletics. The purpose is to push them to higher levels. I will continue to push them in this area!3.

__Bronze Certificate Awards (by grade):__CONGRATULATIONS to the following students who won their first Bronze Certificate Award during the first week of Pioneers, August 19-23. A Bronze Certificate Award is earned when a Pioneer reaches 1,000 points during the week. This can be done in approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Many of the Pioneers earn many points during their session each week. Pioneer's names & grades are listed & they received their certificates in class this week:- Layton D. (2)
- Gabe T. (2)
- Fara A. (3)
- Landon P. (3)
- Megan G. (3)
- Conner B. (4)
- Landon D. (4)
- Liam D. (4)
- Ashlyn M. (4)
- Caleb T. (4)
- Fogo A. (5)
- Jared M. (6)
- Peter F. (7)
- Joe M. (7)
- Andrew P. (7)
- Steven P. (8)

4.

__Mathletes of the Week:__Each week, I will be spotlighting a few of the Pioneers as Mathletes of the Week. Be looking for your Pioneer to be acknowledged for his or her hard work! Based on their work during the week of August 19, the following Pioneers are Mathletes of the Week:**Megan G.**(3) -- Megan worked very hard on Mathletics, earning 5,020 points in one week! She excelled in areas such as number operations, specifically fractions. Keep up the great work, Megan!

**Caleb T.**(4) -- Caleb also worked hard in Mathletics, earning 4,468 points in one week! He did a wonderful job on Live Mathletics solving 2,987 problems, a high of 43 problems in one minute, with an average of 98% accuracy. Wow, Caleb!

**Jared M.**(6) -- Jared exceeded all expectations, earning 6,715 points last week! He worked very hard on proportions and ratio word problems. Way to go, Jared!

Keep up the great work everyone!!!

## August 23, 2013

Hello!

We had a wonderful start to the Math Pioneers program! The Pioneers have worked very hard, many have already earned a Bronze Certificate Award to be passed out at their next class, & a few CCS Pioneers even made it into the TOP 100 STUDENTS IN THE USA for the Mathletics Hall of Fame!!! (This is constantly updated, but keep looking for CCS students. I have seen 6 this week!)

By the way, the Bronze Certificate Award is earned by reaching 1,000 points in a week, which starts over each Sunday. A Pioneer could realistically reach this goal in 45 - 60 minutes per week, so encourage your Pioneer.

Pioneers can log into their accounts anytime by going to
